-- me attempting this fiendishly awkward Phil Collins drum pattern. I do not claim to have got this wholly correct, and I don't doubt that someone will tell me I got the sticking wrong, or the bass drum part less than accurate, or there are both too many and too few ghost notes etc........
Anyway, this is my attempt. The verses are in 10/8 or 5/4 or something, and those multiple ghost notes that crop up around beats 8 and 9 are just outrageous. Phil even changes the number of ghosts during the verses, especially when he moves onto the ride.
What really disturbs me is that on the SACD version, I have a horrible feeling I can hear Phil putting in an extra bass drum beat right in the middle of the two groups of ghosts! I mean, fuck me, is he having a laugh?!! I tried it out, and whilst I can do it, the groove alludes me -- therefore you only get the single bass drum, 'non SACD version'! I actually find it very hard to hear the drum part in detail on the original recording.
The bit at 3'47 is meant to be the one and only fill that does actually occur in a verse - it is not a mistake!
The chorus's are great fun to play, with the epic fills and especially those incredible off-beat things he does at 2'42 and 4'36. Some of my fills could have been better, as you will see from my expressions, but anyway, I enjoyed learning this over the past week. Hope you enjoy.
