Ok, well I will admit it: I SERIOUSLY under-estimated this one. I have always figured it to be one of the few relatively straightforward Copeland covers, and have never really studied it. I could not have been more wrong.
Anyway, at risk of people finding this Police cover to be in the same league as my Reggatta de Blanc attempt, I have posted it nonetheless.
For me, it is the chorus's that are the biggest problem. It's that bass drum of his. Like 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic', Stewart plays a semi-random bass drum pattern. Sometimes he hits all the 8's on the bass drum (though not the one under the snare drum, as you would expect from him!), sometimes he hits the 'and' before the snare, sometimes the 'and' after; sometimes he plays two 8's only before the snare, and sometimes afterwards. Sometimes he leaves a gap for the 'ding-ding' of the ride bell, and sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he plays all the 8's on the ride bell, sometimes he doesn't. I mean, fucking hell! What are you supposed to do to copy it? Transcribe it, I guess, if you can be bothered.
I couldn't, so what you get is my attempt at randomness. As a result, my cover sounds nothing like the Copeland masterpiece. And to think I have only just noticed: that's what trying to do decent covers on YouTube does to you: stops you being lazy!
The verses are not easy either, it need not be said. Great hi-hat work by Stewart as per usual.
I am doing Murder By Numbers next -- and you know what: that one IS hard, and yet I reckon I will actually find it easier to do a decent cover than I have done on Don't Stand So Close. Weird.
