-- me drumming along to this classic Police track. A simple drum cover? You're having a laugh! -- This is a Copeland masterpiece of understatement. I have always found this incredibly difficult to get right. It's those damn pauses -- hands up if you have a nightmare trying to get 'em spot on, especially with the awkward accents just before the backbeat comes back. Both my hands are up.
Anyway, the amazing displaced bar after 0'46, with the backbeat suddenly on the 3 and 1, and with the ride bell intro, just blows my mind. The other one after 1'57 is a little bit easier, with the beat coming back to 2 and 4 (and another ride bell intro), but it still tests your internal clock in a big way. Sting's vocals do not help with the timing in these bits either, for the hapless drummer! Brilliant stuff by the whole band.
