Quick correction before we get into it — in an earlier video we talked all about the original Darius from 1987, but the actual gameplay in that short was G-Darius, the 1997 sequel. My bad on that one, and thanks to everyone who pointed it out. I've taken down that earlier video and I'm reposting this one with the correct information. Here's the real story behind what you're actually watching.
G-Darius came from Taito and was the fourth arcade game in the Darius series, and the first one to go fully 3D with its backgrounds and enemies, even though the gameplay itself still plays like a classic side scrolling shooter. There's actually a fun little detail hiding in the name too. G-Darius is an anagram of Gradius, which is funny since Gradius was basically Taito's biggest rival shooter series at the time.
The coolest new thing in this game is the Capture Ball. You can grab almost any enemy ship and either blow it up like a bomb or hold onto it to charge up a beam attack. Bosses fire their own version of that beam right back at you, so when both beams meet they literally clash on screen and whoever mashes the button faster wins the exchange. This is also the only Darius game that doesn't use Proco and Tiat, the two pilots whose names spell Taito Corp backwards in every other entry in the series.
