Look at that 2001 stamped in the corner and think about what it actually means. Sega announced on January 31, 2001 that it was killing the Dreamcast and walking away from hardware for good, a decision that cost the company somewhere around six hundred and eighty nine million dollars in write offs. Production stopped that March. Outtrigger arrived in North America on July 24 of the same year. Sega put a brand new online multiplayer shooter onto a console it had already publicly buried.

That was deliberate, oddly enough. When Sega announced the exit it also said the fifty to sixty games still in development would ship anyway. Outtrigger was one of them, and it is a strange thing to hold in your hands now. A dead platform's last gasp, made by the best studio in the building.

Because this is Sega AM2, the team behind Virtua Fighter, Out Run, Space Harrier and Shenmue. Hiroshi Kataoka directed it with Yu Suzuki producing. It started out in Japanese arcades in November 1999 on Naomi hardware, where four people could play at once, and the whole thing plays like Quake III Arena if somebody had swapped the grimy browns for bright color and arcade snap. You pick one of four characters, each with their own weapon specialty and their own speed and jump stats, or you build your own from scratch.

The Dreamcast version added something the arcade cabinet never had. Six player online, running over the console's built in modem, at a time when no other machine on the market shipped with one. You could plug in a keyboard and mouse too, which was almost unheard of on a console back then, and Japan bundled the game with the Dreamcast Mouse.
Then comes the sting. The European release had the online mode taken out completely, and reviewers hammered Sega for it. The official servers eventually went dark as well, the way everything from that era did, with the last Dreamcast service hanging on in Japan until 2007. But people never let it go. Fans rebuilt private servers and put Outtrigger back online themselves, twenty odd years later, on a console that has been discontinued since before some of you were born. Did you ever get a Dreamcast online?
