In this video I look at the FUJINON XF200mm F2 R LM OIS WR and talk about whether it is worth 6000$?
The Fujinon 200 f/2.0 is a lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.0 and a minimum aperture of f/22. It has a 305mm field of view on a 35mm full frame equivalent. I has 19 elements in 14 groups (2 ED elements and 1 super ED element). It has 9 rounded blades. It weighs in at a whopping 2.265 kg.
It also comes with the XF1.4X TC F2 WR teleconverter which goves you a 427mm f/2.8mm equivalent (effectively brining your max f down to f/2.8.Fuji boasts fast and silent autofocus. It also has image stabilization 5.0 stops is the claim. Via the side buttons, Fuji gives you functions like Focus preset position where you can go back to preset focal lengths with the push of a button.
Like all lenses in this price range, there is a focus range selector to give you even higher AF speeds. Other side buttons include AF-ON and Focus lock. The lens dust, moisture and temperature resistant down to -10 Celsius. It is indeed a nice lens. But the reason I wanted to talk about the technical specs was really to show you who exactly this lens is for. Because of weather sealing, stabilization and crazy open f/2 and absence of variable focal length, it is pretty apparent that all those wanting to use this lens as a walk around tourist lens should indeed move on.
Fuji is clearly aiming their sights toward a select few; sports and wildlife photographers. All these types of features are needed for these types of photographers. There are not a great deal of features and one would seemingly think that this lens does not have much to offer. But do not forget that this lens does all of the things it does have really well.
A little mention however must go to some of the things you might want to use it for for the hell of it. I believe that in specific cases of event photography, this would be a great lens. I am shooting a circus show next week. And, like all show events, light is kept to a minimum. I believe that this lens might be a great answer to those wanting to shoot a show. Sure the classic 70-200mm (35mm range) is the perfect lens for events but this lens is right in that max focal length one uses when they are far away in silent events.I also thing that for street fashion, this would be a great lens to get that bokeh feel that is so popular among fashion photographers. Let us see people. I have it for two weeks and plan to extensively put it through its paces so stay tuned!!
