Everyone wants to live the high life
In any industry in demand the question of how to get into that industry always comes up. As more people want to get into an industry with limited slots, it becomes more and more of a mystery on how to get into that industry. Fashion photography is no exception. We look at some of these photographers living the high life surrounded by beautiful people and travelling the world and just wonder how they got there. This article sort of goes over some essential tips and tricks to getting into that industry.
Here are the steps to getting there
Take a passion inventory
Build your portfolio portfolio portfolio
Build mission based photo assignments
Take pictures of loved ones
Offer your photo services to those you admire
Display and showcase immediately
Cold call
Do not limit yourself to superficial beauty
Give all of this time
Before even starting this list, ask yourself the following questions: Is this my passion? Do I want to be a photographer bad? Despite numerous criticisms, will I be able to keep on making photos? If the answer is yes for all of this keep on reading. If it is no, save yourself some time and move on. Photography is an industry driven by passion. You compete with a whole load of passionate people. If the drive is not there, just forget it.
Love photography. Do not love the lifestyle. If you are chasing a lifestyle, you might be able to get it, but not in the first 5 years. You really do have to earn it.
No matter where you are in the process, your goal should always be the portfolio. At every level of the game, the only real thing that counts is your portfolio. It is the thing that allows you to work with amateur models, professional models, and progressively more professional people. There is a reason why I say this now. You will understand as you go down the list
You need to start somewhere. Take pictures of friends and family. Resign yourself to the idea that for a little while you have to work for free. Might as well practice with people that are already patient with who you are. Also, and most importantly, do not skimp on quality. Just because these people are close and will tolerate your ways does not mean you should slack off.
Make all your shoots project based. Have a plan and an artistic approach to all your projects. This will get you used to the idea of an order from your client. for instance, if you are taking pictures of a sibling, tell yourself that those pictures will be taken "near a waterfall", or with a "dark theme", or a shoot where "everyone jumps". These are missions. By self imposing these missions you get your attitude trained and geared toward a client order environment.
Display and showcase right away. Take the time to post content on Insta, YouTube, Facebook, and other galleries. These mediums come in handy when it is time to show what you do. A good Instagram post can take a hell of a long tie but it pays off.
Once you have taken pictures of those close to you move on to the cold call. Get ready to get a great deal of non responded emails and flat out rejections. This is something we all need to get used to. Rejection is just part of the game and has nothing to do with you personally. Your approach to all people, be it amateur or professional, is always the same. Contact them with a friendly email, link to your best work, make sure that you specify the following points. "Hello I checked your shots out and I love your look I would love to work with you" Please check out my portfolio and see if it might interest you. It is very important that you push across the idea that the model will be getting something out of the shoot as well. Many times I will include a statement in my email that says "If you have any concepts that you would like to have photographed, please tell me, I am open" " The most important thing is that we both get something out of the photo shoot"
Do not limit yourself to great looking healthy and young. There is magic and beauty in all types of people. Remember that interesting, communicative and open minded subjects also go a long way. Also, remember that by opening up your horizons, you might find other aspects of photography that pull you in.
Ensure growth and give the growth time. You cannot be someone who is impatient. It will show in your work.
