This video is on whether you should buy the Fujinon 55-200 f3.5-4.8 or the 50-140 f/2.8. I believe that the actual quality of the Fuji 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 makes it difficult to shell out the money to just have the fixed aperture. Sometimes it makes sense, other times it does not.
For the past year now I have been working with the Fujinon 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 lens. It has, to me, been quite the eye opener on how the quality of a lens can be second to none at, what I consider, a relatively low price. I have done some great work with the 55-200. Unlike other affordable zoom lenses, its I.Q is quite spectacular and as sharp as a tack when zoomed in. I was not expecting such a great quality from this class of lens (i.e. entry level zoom)
The 55-220 is not perfect
The 55-200 has an f that closes from f/3.5 at the wide end to a dark f/4.8 at the zoom end. Now I had initially bought this lens because budget did not permit me to purchase the 50-140 f/2.8 because the cost of that lens is pretty darned crazy. Did I regret my purchase? No! Did I sell the 55-200 and go out and buy the 50-140mm f/2.8? Yes. So why, you might ask, would I do that if I thought the lens was great. It all boils down to that closing F
The lens similarities
Both lenses have roughly the same focal length and for that reason are comparable (50-140mm = 75-210mm 35mm equivalent) as opposed to the (55-200mm = 82.5-300mm 35mm equivalent) So both lenses should be used for the same purpose right? Well the answer to this question is yes and no. Most of the times they can be used for the same purpose but not always. For certain situations the 50-140mm has an enormous performance edge on the 55-200mm
Both lenses have great image quality over the whole zoom range, this I can testify to. But after using both lenses I guess what this whole article is about is to tell you when I deem it worth it to go ahead and spend the extra 1000$ for a 50-140 lens.
Where the 55-200 beats the 50-140mm
The most marking difference, to me at least, is in that closing aperture on the 55-200. Believe it or not, because the 55-200 has stunning image quality it beats out the 50-140 in one super important category: weight and size. The 50-140 is substantially bigger and can definitely weigh you down if you decide to be mobile. From my experiences so far the 50-140 is quite a bit sharper but not enough to justify the huge extra expense this lens can entail.
