Well, the time is finally here, and we are officially heading to the galaxy! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is finally out in theaters, and we literally just walked out of our screening. Honestly, the anticipation for this one has been completely off the charts. Ever since the massive success of the first Illumination Mario movie, fans have been wondering how they could possibly top it. Moving the setting to the cosmos with a Super Mario Galaxy adaptation seemed like the perfect, logical next step. Woohoo! We strapped in, grabbed our popcorn, and prepared to see how Mario and Luigi handled zero gravity, Lumas, and the vastness of space. So Did The Super Mario Galaxy Deliver? Were The Critics Right?
First things first, I have to talk about the music. We just got out of the theater, and I’ve got to say, the soundtrack was absolutely phenomenal. If you are a long-time Nintendo fanboy, you know that the original Super Mario Galaxy game features one of the greatest, most sweeping orchestral soundtracks in gaming history. The movie definitely honors that legacy. While I don't think the overall score was quite as punchy or iconic as the first movie—which admittedly had a massive, almost impossible legacy to live up to with all those classic themes packed in—it still delivered some incredible auditory moments. Hearing those grand, space-faring melodies fully orchestrated on the big screen was a massive treat for the ears.
Now, let's talk about the world-building, because there were a lot of things packed into this runtime. The amount of Easter eggs hidden in the background of almost every single frame is staggering. I’m going to have to watch this movie several more times when it finally hits physical media just to pause the video and catch absolutely everything! But the biggest talking point has to be the crossover elements. We’ve all heard the online rumors that Fox McCloud from the Star Fox franchise was going to make an appearance. Well, he was in it, and honestly, it was handled in a very logical sense considering the cosmic setting. Seeing an Arwing zoom by or having Fox integrated into the galactic lore just works perfectly. It strongly makes me think that Illumination and Nintendo are actively setting up a Super Smash Bros. type crossover cinematic event. It feels like the beginning of a true interconnected universe!
As for the pacing, the movie kind of took a little while to get ready and find its footing. You only get a real quick look at Donkey Kong towards the beginning before the story shifts entirely to the cosmic adventure, which makes sense, but definitely left me wanting just a bit more of the DK crew. I’m not going to spoil the ending here, but I do want to touch on the character dynamics. There is a relationship built between two characters that I don't exactly love on a personal level, but I have to admit that it makes total sense from a narrative, movie-making standpoint. It gives the story the emotional anchor it needs to push through the final act, even if it diverges slightly from what hardcore lore purists might expect.
What was my absolute favorite part of the movie? I’ve always been a massive fan of retro Nintendo hardware, from the NES all the way up through the modern era. So, seeing the Super Scope 6 make a prominent appearance on the big screen absolutely made my day! The Super Scope 6 is such a bizarre, chunky, and beautiful piece of Super Nintendo peripheral history, and seeing it utilized in a modern animated movie was the exact kind of deep-cut fan service that I live for. It’s those little nods to classic 16-bit era hardware that show the creators really care about the long, weird history of the company.
