Far too often in the retro gaming and modern video game community, we tend to immediately jump down the throats of those who screw up, make an honest mistake, or simply do not have the same level of historical gaming knowledge as the rest of us. It is the unfortunate nature of being online in today's digital landscape. Recently, a prominent content creator screwed up big time on social media regarding a piece of classic gaming history. But truthfully, I would argue that the public relations company that blindly sent him a promotional retro item screwed up even more by not providing proper context. More importantly, I truly believe this viral situation is a massive opportunity for the retro community to show some much-needed grace, rather than resorting to toxic internet outrage and endless ridicule.
If you look at the footage provided, this is LootTracker FN (also referred to as LootTracker FX) on X, formerly Twitter. My understanding is that he is primarily a successful Fortnite creator. He mainly posts about modern digital Fortnite updates and news. However, as you can see in his video, he recently received a promotional package containing one of the highly sought-after, limited edition physical re-releases of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game! But there was a massive problem: he clearly had absolutely no idea what it was or what console system it was made for. He looks at the classic black Sega shell and says, "No way... Is that a Sega Genesis game, or is that a Super Nintendo?" He genuinely struggles to identify this legendary piece of 16-bit history. For people of my generation who grew up blowing into cartridges, watching him fumble makes him look uneducated about gaming history. But here is the crucial thing we all need to remember: you never truly know what someone's background is. I am not trying to make excuses for his lack of knowledge, but this situation is exactly where the modern digital-only gaming era gets you.
This is exactly where it falls on veteran retro gaming content creators to step up and patiently explain to younger creators like LootTracker FN exactly what they are looking at and why it is culturally important! I mean, this is an original-style physical Sega Genesis cartridge. How many people in his specific age bracket have realistically ever seen one of these chunky plastic cartridges in real life? Unless you actively visit retro video game stores or conventions, you are not going to see these. For younger gamers, the only physical video game cartridge they are familiar with is the Nintendo Switch game card, which looks much more like a tiny SD card. The fact that this young creator doesn't instinctively know the Sega Genesis was a dedicated hardware console shows the massive generational divide. Initially, my knee-jerk reaction was to think, "Wow, this guy is so dumb." But I am going to get preachy here and talk about grace. Grace is God's gift for undeserved help, love, and forgiveness given to people. No one on this earth is perfect. Only one brother has ever been perfect, and he died over 2,000 years ago.
I genuinely feel bad for LootTracker FN because I have seen the viral comments and he is getting completely torn apart by angry gamers. Some would say deservedly so, but I would argue naively so.
