Is the era of Xbox being owned by Microsoft perhaps coming to an end? Yes. No. Well, maybe. Here is exactly what is going on in the gaming industry today.

Recently, Asha Sharma, the newly appointed chief of Xbox, came out and released some highly scrutinized information regarding where Microsoft's gaming division has been, where they are currently going, and the drastic measures they need to take to stay afloat. Despite massive revenues and investments over the past five years, Xbox is looking to end this fiscal year down at an alarming 3% profit margin. In the corporate world, before a sale or before you look to be acquired by a larger entity, you will typically cut expenses anywhere you possibly can to make your balance sheet look much better to a potential new buyer. With Xbox facing major layoffs across the board and an internal restructuring, many analysts and fans are left wondering: is Microsoft actively looking to spin off the Xbox brand?

On a lighter note, if you are a fan of the original hardware or a retro gaming enthusiast, there is some exciting news. Microsoft has announced a new 25th-anniversary Xbox console. Paying homage to the original system, it features that iconic translucent green shell. You are absolutely going to love this aesthetic throwback—and you are also going to love the fact that you can see exactly how much dust is accumulating inside your system! However, due to severe component shortages across the tech sector, they have openly admitted that they cannot manufacture as many of these consoles as they would like. From the start of the Xbox Series S and X generation to where they are at now, internal components are nearly four times as much for them to build a system as when they initially launched. Pretty soon, that cost is going to be up to five times. More expensive components inevitably mean more expensive hardware, which means you and I pay more for the systems at retail.

Historically, Microsoft always looked to use Xbox to bring their broader software suite directly into the living room. It is one of the main reasons why the Kinect was such a prominent, forced feature of the Xbox One S and One X generation. The Kinect was supposed to be one of those integrated tools where you just say, "Xbox, turn on Netflix," and it works for you seamlessly. Today, we have dedicated digital assistants in our homes that will do that for us automatically and far more efficiently. While it does bring them in some significant revenue from a non-traditional Microsoft audience, they desperately need to improve the overall performance of that ecosystem to try to gain back the core customers they have lost over the years.

Speaking from personal experience here at RoXolid Productions, I have an Xbox Series S, and it has been unplugged for almost a year now. I simply do not use it. There is absolutely nothing compelling on that hardware that I cannot already play on a Nintendo Switch, the highly anticipated Switch 2, or a PlayStation 5 that makes me want to spend my time in their ecosystem. Plus, looking at the wider PC gaming market and Steam, a massive portion of the customer base that may have bought an Xbox in the past is migrating to Steam instead for the sheer versatility.

I think Xbox is going to have an incredibly uphill battle with whatever their next generation of hardware turns out to be. I do not know necessarily that it is going to be released under Microsoft's continued ownership of the Xbox brand, but there are a lot of things that definitely need to be flushed out here in the coming months.

Let me know what you think down below in the comments! Do you see Microsoft spinning off the Xbox brand? Do you actually want them to spin off the Xbox brand? And if so, who would you like to see buy them? Elon likes video games, doesn't he?
