Final Fantasy IV: Ultima is a hack by 8-bit fan that aims to present a more expansive version of the classic. New weapons, spells, bosses, and a modified overworld are just a few of the changes on tap.

The latest version of the patch can always be found here:

Version being played: 21k

I did say we were getting back on the optional boss beatdown last time, but a new version coming out lead to a quick replay of the game due to some changes that happened.

First off...some rewards from optional fights got upgraded. The Magma Golem fight still gives the Flare Sledgehammer upon its defeat, but it also confers an Adamant Helm. Boosts all stats by 5, resists fire/ice/thunder, makes the wearer immune to charm/sleep/stun, and is effective when defending against dragon type enemies. Like the Adamant Armor, it can be used by everyone.

Secondly...Rydia & Kain got buffed. Kain got a new command, Soar, which is basically Edward's Hide, but in this case, when you decide to have him return to the battlefield, you can pick which enemy you want to have him come crashing down on.

In Rydia's case? Several of her summons got reworked. Leviathan deals ice damage now, Chocobo now gets stronger depending on Rydia's attack power, Sylph hits much harder, and Asura's party wide Life 1 effect got replaced by a similar party wide Shell effect.

If that wasn't enough, Rydia also gets four brand new summons. Witch is just the Mage summon renamed while Raiden is a strong lightning attuned AoE attack.

The real beast though is Phoenix. Hits all enemies as expected, but the power is comparable to Bahamut, maybe a shade weaker. It also revives any fallen party members, but with very little health (lower than Life 1!). Best of all, it has a VERY low cast time. It does cost 99 mp though so watch out for that.

As for the final summon? Well, I haven't located that one yet, but I suspect that the Black Dragon's new costume change into Neo Bahamut has the answer I seek.

Enough of all that though, let's go beat up the perfect AI one more time because it saw a pretty big buff in its battle capabilities.

First off, the perfect AI has no less than three each of Attackers & Defenders. You pretty much have to drop the Defenders now because have fun trying to outpace more than one instance of 6553 hp healing on the main boss per turn.

Oh, and the Defenders now have a new move, Firewall. Very minor healing, but it also buffs the defenses of the entire enemy party.

As for the Attackers, they have tons of new moves, but in reality they're just moves we've seen before with a new name. They do have lightning element attacks now though so you'll want to bring along equipment to resist that.

Rosa and Porom are going to be even more insanely helpful here than ever before. That schtick where the boss revives the adds at low hp levels? It revives ALL of them and you may not have enough characters ready to nuke the Defenders quickly. Having them charge up an Ultima before the reviving begins would be very nice (hopefully without anyone important getting hit by Short Circuit, aka ElectroMg).

Next time...back to earth to deal with an optional boss.
