Daily, in the United States and approximately 15 countries, Brethren Volunteer Service workers can be found providing hospitality for families of people in prison, serving in local soup kitchens and homeless shelters, building houses for those without shelter, and walking in solidarity with sisters and brothers, living with mental illness. -- Since 2010, Portland Peace Church of the Brethren has hosted an "intentional Brethren Volunteer community house" for volunteers who serve in Portland and East Multnomah County, Oregon. Brent Carlson, host of "Brethren Voices," featuring four BVS'ers, serving at three community agencies, providing outreach to homeless people and those in need.
Three of the volunteers are away from their homes in Germany. Toni Egner shares about her experiences at Sisters of the Road, located in downtown Portland. Energy Assistance at Human Solutions is discussed by Jasmin Sprengel. Lea Kroener shares her experiences about volunteering at SnowCap Community Charities. Alex McBride, a graduate of Manchester University, Manchester, Indiana, discusses the needs of 5,000 families served by SnowCap in Portland, Oregon.
