Poverty affects millions of people in the U.S. ... and around the world. Most of those affected are children. "Childhood Poverty" was the theme and focus of the Church of the Brethren's 2013 Christian Citizenship Seminar. this year's seminar, which had its roots in the 1950's, saw 55 youth and advisors meet in New York City for study on childhood poverty. CCS participants toured the United Nations and other sites to learn the affects that poverty has on children in this country and around the world.
The youth prepared to put their thoughts and faith into action as they traveled to Washington D.C., to meet with their congressional representatives.
"Brethren Voices" interviews youth about their experiences. Each year, the focus is a little different. Two youth of the 1950's, who presently live at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home also share their experiences. The program also features Brethren who accompanied different groups as youth advisors.
Pastor Dennis Lohr of the Palmyra Church of the Brethren discusses the significance of this special event.
