“Brethren Voices” shares what Brethren do and say as a matter of their faith. Since 1980, when disaster strikes, Children’s Disaster Services has responded to meet the needs of children, by setting up childcare centers in shelter and disaster assistance centers, across the nation. Specially trained volunteers respond to the needs of traumatized children by providing calm, safe places in the midst of the chaos. Unfortunately, there are many different types of natural disasters such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, but also human-caused disasters.
“Brethren Voices” meets with John Kinsel, a member of the Beavercreek Church of the Brethren of Southern Ohio, to share his stories about this unique ministry for children and their parents, who have survived disasters of all kinds.
John Kinsel has served 40 years as a volunteer with Children’s Disaster Services, mostly as a trainer of volunteers. Kinsel received a B.A. Degree in Early Childhood Education, and worked as a pre-school teacher with Head Start for several years. His experience with children led him to getting a Masters Degree in Child Development and Family Function.
This edition of “Brethren Voices” shares Kinsel’s experiences as a CDS volunteer, who assisted to provide child care for children, victimized, by the disaster on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in New York City.
