...#toptipsontuesdays again & this week it's a little tip for your ember pan or coal catcher for friction fire lighting.

...Using a slice of bracket fungus for the pan not only catches your ember but it will catch light & smoulder for quite a while so if you didn't manage to ignite your tinder bundle, for whatever reason, you still have your your burning fungus as insurance.

...You don't really have to know exactly what the bracket fungus is & it needs no processing other than being dry. Horses hoof fungus, ganoderma brackets & birch polypore work well but I've had good results with many others too that I couldn't identify.

...It's the trama layer, the top spongey layer above the spore tubes, that work best. Just cut the hard crust away to reveal the soft layer & cut it into slices to carry in your kit.
