Alex Beyman, the map author for Duketroid, writes in his ReadMe for the level, "A conceptual Duke map which replicates the fundamental game design concept behind Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and many others in that genre. When I realized Duke 3D has enough powerups to make such a design work, I realized I had to drop everything I was doing and make it." which is an interesting inspiration, one I think I can get behind now that he throws it out there. So how did it work out? Let's play it and find out! Random Trivia we learned on stream, this is the same Author as the BobSP series, classic maps we covered previously on stream.
The second map of the day was from 1998 by Tim Conneen called Confession. It had a nice meta storyline that chat agreed was pretty ahead of its time. As far as I can tell, this is his only map, other then some tutorial stuff I noticed for tricks he used in this map using SectorEffector0 tricks. Neat stuff!
Our final map for the stream was Dark Places 5 by Taivo Maripuu. Taivo has a very unique build style, and this map is very Taivo. Its a switch hunt, with my only complaint being the switch choice, as it makes memorizing them important to cut down on backtracking. I also just wanted more weirdness here, given its setting, which is saying something given how odd it is.
What we do in these streams is showcase user created content to show what kind of passion and creativity this niche community has crafted to show others what Duke Nukem 3D has to offer for any Retro Boom Shooter FPS lovers, or even old Duke Fans (like myself) who may have not dipped their toes into the user content world. Additionally, we take a look at how these 2.5D games create their 3D world from a level design perspective as I try to learn from those who came before me since I'm currently making a map of my own for Duke Nukem 3D using Mapster32, the included level editor for eDuke32.
