We get into the spooky season with The Red Series, a set of user maps by Merlijn v. Oostrum who would later go on to make the excellent 2021 user episode, Shaky Grounds. This first map came out in 2001 with the fifth map being released in 2005, in 2013 the author revisited the first two maps and remade them to help enhance the overall experience. These "remixed" versions are what we will be playing today, though we may also check out the original two maps to see how drastic those changes were. While I'm going into this blind, I do know it fits the Halloween season very well as it leans into the horror, or creepy aspect of Duke Nukem 3D.
What we do in these streams is showcase user created content to show what kind of passion and creativity this niche community has crafted to show others what Duke Nukem 3D has to offer for any Retro Boom Shooter FPS lovers, or even old Duke Fans (like myself) who may have not dipped their toes into the user content world. Additionally, we take a look at how these 2.5D games create their 3D world from a level design perspective as I try to learn from those who came before me since I'm currently making a map of my own for Duke Nukem 3D using Mapster32, the included level editor for eDuke32.
