If your curls look tighter underneath but looser on top, it’s not automatically a mistake.
Most of the time, it comes down to:
✨ natural curl pattern variation
✨ slightly more damage on the top layer
✨ how the hair is parted
✨ water weight elongating certain sections
Not every difference means you’re doing something wrong.
When I’m troubleshooting this, I first check:
• Are both sides being styled evenly?
• Is one side favored because of hand dominance?
• Is the hair just naturally different from side to side?
Often, the fix is as simple as separating a larger section, getting in there to scrunch properly, and lifting the hair so it’s not stuck to the scalp.
Water helps curls form — but too much water sitting too long can also stretch them out. It’s always a balance.
