As a curl coach, I often don't recommend mousse — most don't make much difference in volume and simply soften your gel's cast. After testing ten, here's what I found.
Marc Anthony claims strong hold. The cast looked promising — then I broke it and the frizz started immediately. Strand test confirmed the curl completely lost its shape.
Cake Gel to Foam claims the hold of a gel. The hold polymer is buried at position nine below conditioning oils and a butter. I didn't even get a cast.
Umberto Giannini claims medium hold. Zero hold, zero texture — and adding a gel on top reduced my gel's hold instead of boosting it.
Kenra had the strongest ingredient profile of anything I tested. Still failed in humidity. Ingredients give you a hypothesis. Testing gives you the answer.
If a mousse doesn't give you hold or texture, it has no purpose in your routine.
