Would the responding police officer recognize and respect our First Amendment right to a free press able to record what we can see in public or would he join the logic of the nimrods that think it’s “harassment” if someone aims a camera at them in public?

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
