Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.

Hawaiian is an Austronesian language native to the Hawaiian Islands, characterized by its use of a limited alphabet that includes only eight consonants and five vowels. It has a rich cultural significance, deeply intertwined with the history, traditions, and identity of the Hawaiian people. Although its usage declined significantly during the 19th and 20th centuries, revitalization efforts have been underway since the late 20th century, leading to increased interest and education in the language today.

The primary difference between Standard Hawaiian and the Ni'ihau dialect lies in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Standard Hawaiian, which is taught in schools and used in media, features a more standardized pronunciation and vocabulary that includes modern influences. In contrast, the Ni'ihau dialect, spoken by residents of Niʻihau island, retains older linguistic features and a more traditional vocabulary, often including words and expressions not commonly found in Standard Hawaiian. Additionally, Ni'ihau speakers may have distinct phonetic variations, making their dialect sound different to those accustomed to Standard Hawaiian.
