Cape Verdean Creole is a Portuguese-based Creole spoken on the Cape Verde islands. It is the native language of almost all Cape Verdeans and a second language for the diaspora. As the oldest living creole, it holds significance in creolistics and is the most widely spoken Portuguese-based creole. While its formal name is Cape Verdean Creole (kabuverdianu), speakers commonly refer to it as "Creole" (kriolu/kriol). Its history is difficult to trace due to limited written records and marginalization during Portuguese rule.
Guinea-Bissau Creole, also called Kiriol or Crioulo, is a Creole language primarily derived from Portuguese. It is spoken in Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and The Gambia. A variant known as Casamance Creole is spoken in southern Senegal, particularly in Casamance, a former Portuguese colony. While Portuguese is Guinea-Bissau's official language, Guinea-Bissau Creole is widely used in trade, informal literature, and entertainment. However, it is not used in media, government, public services, or education.
