Neapolitan is a Romance language spoken by approximately 7.5 million people, mainly in Southern Italy and in immigrant communities in the U.S., Germany, Northern Italy, Argentina, and Australia. The term "Neapolitan" broadly encompasses various mutually intelligible dialects originating from the former Kingdom of Naples. Although related to Italian, Neapolitan is generally not mutually intelligible with it. Linguistically, Neapolitan is an independent Romance language descended from Latin, not a dialect of Standard Italian.
Sicilian is a Romance language spoken primarily on Sicily and nearby islands. It is part of the Extreme Southern Italian language group and is distinct enough from Standard Italian to be considered a separate language. Recognized as a minority language by UNESCO and referred to as a language by the Sicilian Region, Sicilian has the oldest literary tradition among Italo-Romance languages. It is spoken by most Sicilians and by emigrant communities worldwide.
