French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.
Alsatian comprises the Alemannic German dialects spoken in Alsace, a region in eastern France that has alternated between French and German control multiple times since 1681. It is closely related to other Alemannic dialects like Swiss German and Swabian but is often mistaken for Lorraine Franconian, a different dialect in the northwest of Alsace and Lorraine. Various external sources have also influenced Alsatian.
