This video describes the concept of action spectra, with respect to photosynthesis. One of the famous experiment that involves the study of filamentous algae illuminated with seven colours of rainbow under the microscope. When motile aerobic cells were placed on the slide along with algae, the tiny aerobic cells accumulated near the blue and red region of the spectrum. This demonstrates that the blue and red region of the spectrum is most efficient in carrying out photosynthesis. The action spectra can also be represented in the form of graph. The x axis of the graph has the wavelength while the y axis of graph shows amount of oxygen evolved during the process. The graph demonstrates two peaks corresponding to blue and red wavelengths of the spectrum. The wavelengths corresponding to green region shows negligible photosynthesis activity.
