To think that I would end up getting to play something like this is an understatement. Welcome to 70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X.
This game is a remaster of Geppy-X that was released for the PS1 in Japan in 1999. We never got this mostly because Sony had those anti-2D policies put in place. But to see it be on modern hardware makes me smile. It's a 2D shooter in every sense of the word while being also an anime. Trying to talk about this is an understatement. Just watch for yourself.
I cover the first four episodes of this game. It's about a trio of pilots who wield vehicles that combine to form a giant robot. And this Giant robot has three different forms, known as Geppy-X. Together these three take on the Cosmic Demon Empire who threaten Earth and have their sights set on Japan. Not to mention it has it's own commercials and eyecatches too that I find really funny.
