21 Crying and Laughing

I thought that I was special,
The most brilliant in our town,
What was so funny about,
The guy dressed like a clown?

Of course I didn’t mention it,
But why didn’t that guy fall,
With a painted face and a pair of stilts,
That made him ten feet tall.

Circus day in Mojave,
And my parents paid the money,
The animals were all tied up,
And the clown, he wasn’t funny.

Then the clown approached us kids,
With the trapeze act flying,
There was circus dust on his face,
He was laughing and he was crying.

This strange person was working hard,
To amuse the kiddies,
But most of us slinked away,
And I myself felt pity.

Years later I told a friend,
That I thought clowns were dumb,
The friend said he felt the same,
But so did everyone.

So it proves I wasn’t special,
Just average at my best,
I never laughed or cried,
I was silent like the rest.
