I’ve called it the demon,
Something was holding me back,
A nice way of saying it is,
I had an academic lack.

I don’t really know what it was,
Or if the demon had a name,
It could have just been laziness,
But I was failing all the same.

The demon went away in high school,
But the results were rather bad,
My grades were only C’s,
Taking the easiest classes that they had.

I had probably failed every grade,
From first grade until the eight,
So compared to what went before,
My high school record was pretty great.

But then I got to college,
Vincennes University,
Where the English professors,
Made a punching bag of me.

After failing at least one time,
I finally passed the freshman course,
But I still had one more English class,
But for me it was the fourth.

I signed up pass or fail,
I would attempt to test out of the class,
A few days later they posted the list,
And for heaven’s sake I passed.
