29 Mistaken Identity
Guidance Counselor

This was readily apparent,
When taking standardized tests,
It is with certainty I can report,
I didn’t do my best.

I didn’t even read the test,
Didn’t know why I should,
It’s not like I cared at all,
Or really understood.

It was 1966,
And I was running track,
My friend Lampson was running too,
And he was not to far back.

So Dave and I played it up,
In this rivalry caper,
And heck-fire I think,
Sometimes we made the paper.

Then one day Lampson won,
And beat me without reservation,
The next day the seniors were called,
To discuss our plans after graduation.

The guidance counselor displayed a grin,
As she mentioned my upset in the mile,
But I noticed it wasn’t my name,
It said David Lampson on the file.

Dave had scored high on everything,
Just ask and I’d be in it,
I wonder how she broke it to Dave,
That he had so many limits.
