23 Last Day on Earth
1969 Lunar Lander LEM
1
It was in July of 1969.
In the Army and on the floor,
Watching the Saturn Five lift off,
Through the TV I heard the roar.
2
Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins,
With a bomb weight of Sixty tons,
Aluminum skin, titanium frame,
And liquid oxygen.
3
Sixty tons going up,
One ton for the splash,
Everything but the Command Module,
It was orbited, burned, or crashed.
4
Except for the LEM that is,
Their taxi to the moon,
The decent module takes them down,
And they landed about noon.
5
Twenty-one hours later,
It was time for them to go,
The ascent module blasted off,
For the orbital docking show.
6
The ascent module was set free,
And Huston sang a joyful tune,
That only leaves the LEM alone,
Still sitting on the moon.
7
The LEM’s last day on Earth,
July 16 was the day,
But it didn’t crash and burn you know,
And on the moon it will always stay.
