77 Low Battery

Let me give you some advice,
Regardless of the dues you’ve paid,
It is real hard to beat a person,
At their chosen trade.

The year was 1984,
I had just bought a new Fiero,
Not a prudent choice overall,
Yet I paid mucho dinaro .

Among the worst cars ever built,
The Fiero seems to have a place,
When not broken, it had no power,
And almost no storage space.

Blasting up I-26 out of Charleston,
In route to Indiana and the family,
But then my check battery light came on,
Passing north of Newberry.

I made it through the mountains,
But by Knoxville with battery waning,
It was steady getting darker,
And then it started raining..

I bought a battery I think at Wal-mart,
It was a new thing back then,
I finally made it to Indiana,
Coasting into the yard of a mechanic friend.

He opened the rear lid up,
It took him exactly one second to see,
The fan belt had eaten through a wire,
The charging wire to the battery.
