20 The Wicked Witch

We have turned the thing inside out,
All the history of the mystics,
With facts we find too hard to read,
That is the story of the witches.

Most everything hinged upon,
Science that was unreliable,
The unknown was just filled in,
With all things supernatural.

And it didn’t help the case at all,
That old women were on their own,
That if your husband died,
You were poor, and all alone.

So if you are the Inquisition,
And need a devil for the rack,
Condemn the weakest of them all,
Bring the poor widow lady back..

Of course we have to test the widow,
Before we burn her at the stake,
Indeed, we must get it right,
There can be no mistake.

So we will dip her in the water,
There’s perfect logic in the theory,
If she drowns then she is innocent,
And if she lives then she is guilty.

There is irony in the trial,
And still more in the twist,
Guilty of being something,
That does not even exist.
Of all the injustice documented in history, it's hard to beat the story of the witches. These poor women (and only a few men) were actually tortured to death for being something that doesn't even exist. Often they would be tortured until they confessed, and then tortured again by burning them at the stake. The good old days.
