With a little creativity, even discarded cork liner can become something beautiful and useful. Here are two simple projects you can try.
Every Thursday, I ride my bicycle around my 55+ community, and I’m always amazed at the useful things people throw away. This week, I found several brand-new rolls of Contact brand cork liner in the trash — and that inspired two fun DIY recycling projects.
Project #1:
I added cork to the bottom of a large ceramic tile to turn it into a protective serving board for my coffee table. It’s perfect for eating dinner in the living room without scratching wooden furniture.
Project #2:
I experimented with using cork liner on the exterior of two extremely old, worn-out books:
Book #1: Fully wrapped in cork (covers + spine). The cork looks nice, but it didn’t adhere well to the spine and cracks when opening the book — an interesting experiment, but not ideal for regular use.
Book #2: Cork only on the front and back covers, with black Gorilla tape reinforcing the spine. This one turned out great! I even added decorative ink designs onto the cork for a unique handmade look.
Cork has a wonderful, warm texture and gives old trash-bound items a completely new life. These aren’t traditional bookbinding methods, but they’re perfect examples of creative reuse, upcycling, and making something fun out of found materials.
