In 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the UK and joined the Prime Minister, David Cameron, at Chequers. The pair were pushing forward towards a 'golden era' in UK-China relations.

To mark the beginning of their 'friendship', the pair enjoyed a pint of Greene King IPA at a 16th-century Buckinghamshire pub. In an ironic twist, the pub where the world leaders enjoyed their pale ale was sold to a Chinese firm the following year.

As Sir Keir Starmer begins his own trip to Beijing, might we see the Prime Minister rolling back the years and diplomatically enjoying a pint in a Beijing bar?
