On 26 November 1979, News at Ten's Martyn Lewis reported on Moscow's metro system which provided public transports as well as shelter from nuclear attacks. 1979 marked a significant year for the USSR, Cold War tensions were high and the Soviets invaded Afghanistan a month after this report. The looming threat of nuclear war meant that accessible nuclear shelter was a matter of public necessity.
