On 6 April 1975, United States veterans who had fought in Vietnam spoke openly about their disillusionment as the war drew to its chaotic end. Interviewed at the Miami Veterans Hospital, they reflected on the cost of a conflict in which nearly 50,000 Americans had been killed and hundreds of thousands more wounded. As North Vietnamese forces advanced and South Vietnam’s army collapsed, many Americans struggled to understand what the war had ultimately achieved. The veterans described deep frustration that so many lives had been lost for an outcome that now seemed impossible to change.
