Today we archive something very special in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I hope to archive the first entry as well someday, but for now I want to take a look at the entry that is very divisive. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has its share of fans, but also a large group that does not like the game. The biggest critique is the fan service and though there are indeed some lovely curves here and there, it is nowhere near as much as other games like Dead or Alive.
Its mostly that the story starts out pretty interesting, but slows down a lot in the middle and is kind of all over the place. It takes place in a world where everyone lives on this gigantic creatures known as titans. You play as the character Rex who spends his days looking for old salvage in a sea of clouds. One day he stumbles upon the mythical character Pyra who will act as Rex's Blade and will fight for him. In return Rex promises Pyra to escort her to a promised land full of green.
I really love the colorful worlds and characters you meet and the music is often very charming too. There are a lot of mechanics to learn, but it really feels like a vast and mysterious world that is fun to explore.
The combat system is okay, though it does depend on some strange mechanics like canceling attack animations and just wiggling your character across the battlefield in order to have faster attack combos. You can also chain attacks with other team mates for some heavy damage and this is very satisfying once you understand how it works. It is definitely a JRPG with a learning curve.
There is also a gacha system in place as you can unlock new Blades to fight for you and this can be a real time sink if you want to collect them all.
The waypoint system can also be sometimes very confusing and is way less clear than the other games as I never got stuck in those. All in all I would say that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not bad, but its also not fantastic. It is just a decent JRPG with a heavy coat of colorful anime and if you enjoy that style, you will have a great time with this lengthy adventure.
