I had a beautiful piece of Elm to turn this week and decided to make a platter from it on my lathe. It was a large piece to begin with which I turned with sloping sides which really brought out the woods grain and natural colours.

On the top I used sticky glue dots to attach star shapes to it before colouring it black then using shades of blue coloured iridescent paints and my cling film technique to colour the top.

Before finishing off the turning to produce the finished product.

This has not been my original plan as you can see at the end of the video where I show you what did not quite work with my original design...
