A mile down the road there is a very cool lighthouse... the Sheringham Point Lighthouse... I've seen it lots of times and it suddenly came into my head that I should try and turn one!
So... I gathered up the woods that I would need and went to work! I started with the central shaft of the tower and hollowed it out... more to keep it from splitting that anything, although I see it has taken on more of an ovoid shape now... and one could keep a map of how to get to the lighthouse in it I suppose!
The cutting of the branch on the band saw was my first attempt at it and I thought it worked quite well! I wanted the walls and the abutments to be the same kind of wood as they are the same colour and I was surprised by how well that worked! I have had a band saw for many years and this is the first time I have been able to get it to track the way I want... (I finally tried a wider blade!) I can see that I will use this a lot more in the future!
The Cedar base has a kind of cool feature to it too... the dark ring cut into it on the one corner, has sand still embedded in it... I know that means that while I was cutting the corners I was putting nicks in my skew but they are all sharpened out now! It does give it a look of authenticity!
