So this is a case of a shop that needs cleaning more than anything else! I am sure that the original will surface at some point! I used a screw this time because even though I had secured both a bolt and a screw made from brass... the point at which I was about to turn on the cameras.... I realized that the bolt was missing! I looked and looked but was unable to find it... so I went with the screw anyway! On the day I finished editing the first video.... I found the bolt!
The difference it will make is that the end that goes into the drive should be more of a moris taper type fit... what I have here works but has not enough length to seat properly... and if it does seat... there is a great deal of hassle to get it back out again! As it turns out I have the cup which takes the point... and I also have a spur which takes a point... so I will to make an extra one so I don’t need to interchange them all the time!
The brass turned very easily although I think it would probably have done better if I could have slowed the lathe down even more. These old lathes go as slow as 875 so a little fast... I use the trick of putting the belt on the smallest pulley but instead of running on the largest one at the other end I go to the next one over so the belt has a lot of slack in it... I also was just using a block of wood in the chuck with a screw driven into the center... next time with the bolt I should be able to use my pin jaws and hold it a little more securely. Nice thing about doing something for the first time... it will be better next time!
Now the other thing that was happening with this turn... which was my first in a couple of weeks as a result of my dealings with the conjunctivitis and as it has happened the last in a while too! I guess the brightness of the brass and the concentrated effort of following what it was doing... my eye has been left kind of shimmery for now... I am sure that it will wear off... already it is better than it was! And very soon I will be back in the shop! The ideas don’t quit just because you are not out there!
Oh and one last thing here... you know that bolt that was lost and now is found... well now the cupped moris taper is gone! I still have the spur drive that takes the point too... but that isn’t the point!
