My understanding of truth... trees are round... 2x4s are not
The build of this project was one that most certainly have gone over 10 minutes if not for the competition guidelines! And then it wasn't till I was halfway through the editing before I realised the truth and that changed everything!! All the hours of making sure that this looked just right when you looked at it from over there... I think I was probably around 18 minutes by then!!
It then became a challenge to be able to make it as short as possible and yet show enough of the build to understand where it came from. There are still vestiges of things gone wrong... sharp eyes will have noticed that when the base is turned around and the chuck is tightened... it tightened all the way... I had made the recess to big! So I had to take it back off and back onto the worm screw and redo the recess!! So you see the first tightening and then the second placement ...then it can be spun again!
The red grain in this wood is very pretty and I don't know if it is the fact that it is rotting or if it has had something stored on it that smelled bad (although you would wonder at that with the pallet coming from a cabinet shop?) But it sure does! Once a finish had been applied the smell was gone... but the flowers... 2 white and 2 reddish brown... the white ones are fine... but the other ones... if you put your nose right up to them... you can still smell this smell! I associate it with something I smelled as a child, but can't put my finger on it!
The turning of the central post has led me to learn some new things... of course I didn't learn them until I was watching what I had done and wondered why I didn't do it like that! Maybe next time I will thin about this sooner!

If you haven't heard of Izzy ...
Well...
He makes bowling balls on a table saw...
What more needs to be said?
And even though I don't have the camera pointing in the right direction...
I am using one of his suggestions of screwing the back piece to the work top...
And then ...
The part you can't see...
I drove another screw just past the edge of the last board...
And then after applying the glue...
I drove wedges between the board and the screw...
It works a whole lot better than anything else I had!
