This is a project to fit a need on a knitting machine table.
In order to make the base as sturdy as possible I left it quite thick and as a result it split as it dried ...
Even though I dried it as slowly as I thought I was supposed to... and yet I wonder if there were steps that I could have taken differently... I will only know for sure after the next time ... and only if I remembered what happened this time... next time!
The cracking didn't hurt the piece at all as I think it looks like a bolt of black lightning running down the side... The spool I had thought thin enough that it wouldn't be affected but I was wrong there too! So the filling was a constant throughout all the pieces... the base the ring and the spool all split in one place or another... all were filled with the Ebony so make a perfect match.
One idea that I didn't elaborate on enough was the sanding of the inside of the captured ring... a piece of sand paper taped to the inner shaft allows the sanding of the inside of the ring... it just takes replacing the grits of paper till you get to where you want to be.
The owls are Barred owls and they make quite a racket at times! That was two different recordings... the intro was outside when they were calling and then the second one was inside the shop... I boosted the gain to make it louder but it was still very clearly heard ... enough so that I heard it over the sanding!
And there was way too much of that!
