Please accept my apologies for the length of time between videos these days. There has been a fair amount of upheaval around here this last while!
My market is just about done for another year so I won’t have my endless array of tops and thumb things to make. It’s great that they sell... but boy do you ever have to come up with a lot of them!
And now the shop is back to a state of comfort! There is stuff everywhere and a coating or two of sawdust over it all! But it is starting to work better than ever.
I am still learning how the new --- model 25-II4QC MI--- for those with an interest --- lathe works... and finding much that I like! I don’t know that this one will stand the test of time as well as the old Craftsman... but the General can sure do some nifty thing the other one couldn’t!
And then there are all the other tools that I am exploring... Dad’s drill press is only 2” bigger than my 8” ... but it sure makes a huge difference when drilling pen blanks.
Everything is getting sorted and figured ... so now it’s just me that needs some improvements! I will find out for sure next week if I have to go back for more chemo or not... I’m rooting for the not! But either way I should be able to get the show on the road now that I have a place to work again!
So the Cedar in this urn is one of those woods that you have to treat gently... it is fairly soft so it doesn’t take much to dent it! And if it’s end grain and it’s thin... it will probably break! You saw what happened to the foot that I had planned! That was why I left the part where the finial --- which was Ebony BTW--- as thick as I did... it might have looked better with more of a cresting splash... but if I had gone there, there probably wouldn’t have been anything left by the time I was done!
And then there was the painting! My normal medium is chalk pastel ... but that is rather difficult to make stay on a piece like this! So I went to the dollar store and bought a box of 10 colours of acrylics, for 2 dollars! It is interesting stuff to work with! I guess the trick is to use your patience and let things dry before you go any further! I’ll have to try that some time! But it was fun to play with and it may not be the best portrait that Sonny has ever had done... but everybody that knew him will know who it is!
Well I had best run... there is a Pallet Time Turner in the planning stages that needs some attention!

after using the parting tool on the lid... I did use a saw to cut it off! It would seem that I forgot that section!
