I continue my memories of growing up poor in Miami, Florida, back in 1962 — this time focusing on the foods we ate that didn’t come from government commodity programs.
If you enjoyed my earlier video about the welfare and surplus foods of the 1960s, this one takes you a step further into everyday life: what we cooked, what we bought, and how families like ours made do when money was tight.
I start off by describing the food landscape in Miami at the time — places like Shell City, one of the first big supermarkets in the country; Frederick’s, with its exotic seafood and meats; and the small mom-and-pop grocery just a block from our house. From there I talk about simple breakfasts,, homemade dinners, and the special dishes we had for holidays, funerals, and Sunday meals.
You’ll also hear about:
The foods that told us times were tough
How we stretched ingredients and made the most of what we had
The old-fashioned milkman and potato chip delivery routes
How kids stayed active all day without video games or phones
Why, even though our food wasn’t fancy, it was memorable and meaningful
Looking back, it wasn’t just about the meals — it was a whole way of life that doesn’t exist anymore. A slice of old Florida history, a bit of anthropology, and a lot of nostalgia.
