In this video, I review Wes Anderson’s beloved film Moonrise Kingdom (2012), a whimsical coming-of-age story set on a New England island in the summer of 1965. The movie follows two twelve-year-olds, Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together, sparking a quirky yet heartfelt adventure. As the adults scramble to find them—including Scout Master Ward (Edward Norton), Police Captain Sharp (Bruce Willis), and Suzy’s eccentric parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand)—the story blends Anderson’s trademark humor, style, and charm with a touching tale of young love and self-discovery.
The film features an outstanding ensemble cast including Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, and Jason Schwartzman. Moonrise Kingdom was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It has since become a modern classic known for its colorful cinematography, symmetrical framing, and nostalgic soundtrack curated by Alexandre Desplat and Benjamin Britten’s compositions.
