Today I’m sharing a little-known winter fishing spot at the junction of the New River Greenway bike path and the Hiatus Road Greenway bike path in Broward County, Florida.
This spot sits right along the New River and is especially good in the wintertime. When the north wind is blowing, you’ve got land behind you to block the cold wind, and because you’re on the south side of the river, you get full sun to help keep you warm. It’s a great place to bring a chair, relax, and do some bottom fishing.
There’s also a lot of underwater structure from the nearby bridge, which makes it a good area to target catfish and many of South Florida’s exotic and invasive fish species — including cichlids, peacock bass, clown knifefish, snakeheads, and more.
During the hotter months, this spot is less pleasant because of traffic noise and heat, and there are better places to fish. But in the wintertime, it becomes a surprisingly nice and very accessible fishing location — especially for anyone fishing by bicycle.
There are no “No Fishing” signs here, and it’s a public space that most people pass by without realizing it’s a usable fishing spot.
As development continues to take away many of the places residents used to fish for free, it’s more important than ever to find and use the access we still have. With a bicycle, you can easily reach many fishing locations throughout Broward County that most people never think about.
