This video is my entry to the 2026 "Make a Movie During the Oscars" challenge created by filmmaker Joel Haver, where creators are encouraged to make a film during the broadcast of the Academy Awards and share their work with the community.
I could not film the Thursday hunt on Sunday during the Oscars as there is no trash then. Even though this film was shot during my regular Thursday Trash and Treasure Hunt and not during the Oscars, and only runs about 12 minutes, it captures the spirit of the challenge: go out, create something, and see what happens.
Trash and Treasure Hunt #113 turned into something I did not expect.
I started the video inside my house, feeling a little discouraged. Like many people, I had been watching too much news and listening to discussions about the future — including concerns about artificial intelligence and where the world may be heading. It left me feeling a bit somber.
But I decided to do what I always do: get outside, get on the bicycle, and go looking through the Thursday night trash piles in my neighborhood.
For those new to the channel, there are over 3,000 homes in my community, and every Thursday night people place items out for Friday pickup. Over the years I’ve found all kinds of things — tools, furniture, antiques, and sometimes objects that turn into stories or even short films.
Before leaving the house I told myself I was going to stay positive. Maybe I would find something interesting… maybe even something that would lift my spirits.
So the treasure hunt begins.
Along the way we see the usual sights: piles of discarded items, trees moving in the wind, clouds passing overhead, and the quiet beauty of an ordinary neighborhood evening.
Then something unexpected happens.
While digging through one pile of trash I discover a painting. When I turn it over, the image completely surprises me — two people holding a Bible. After the way the day had started, the moment felt almost like a message.
If I went out looking for something hopeful, this might have been it.
The video ends by the river where I reflect on the day’s discoveries, the strange ways inspiration sometimes appears, and the simple advice that came to mind:
Don’t let the bastards get you down.
Sometimes you just have to keep moving, keep looking, and keep your eyes open for the small signs that remind you life is still full of meaning.
