Every week, the local bulk trash is full of things people no longer want — and sometimes it holds real stories.
I like to ride my bike around on trash day to see what I might discover. Over the years I’ve found all kinds of things worth sharing: a woman’s discarded audio recorders that captured a season of her life in 2010, a collection of forgotten paintings that became my video “A Charmed Life,” and even a series of chairs that each seemed to have its own history.
This time, I came across a bundle of 32 handwritten letters from a second-grader in New York back in 1990–1991. They’re funny, touching, and give a simple, honest glimpse into a child’s world over thirty years ago.
In this video, I sit down on my couch and read some of my favorites — including a Halloween poem about a witch, a monkey, and a ghost; a lively story about Field Day at Flushing Meadows Park; and a sweet thank-you note to a teacher for showing a movie that inspired a dream of becoming the best dancer on the block.
