The Shigir Idol is the oldest decorated piece of wood in the world. Dating back 12,000 years it takes the form of a tall totem pole and is covered in geometric patterns. Experts didn't expect to find a piece of ritual art dating as far back as the Mesolithic, so it was a truly exceptional discovery.
